PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WHEN YOU VISIT THE OFFICE, VIDEOS, PAMPHLETS & BROCHURES
ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND MANY OF THE PROCEDURES THAT WE PERFORM, AND MANY OF
THE CONDITIONS FOR WHICH YOU MAY WANT FURTHER INFORMATION. DO NOT HESITATE TO REQUEST ANY
OF OUR LEARNING AIDS OR TO ASK US QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF YOUR CONCERNS.
YOUR EXAMINATION
You will be receiving an ophthalmological examination. This may include the following procedures:
* Refraction for Glasses.
* Biomicroscopic examination of the eye (using the slit lamp) to detect corneal problems, cataracts, etc.
* Evaluation of the "angle" of the eye, which is the drainage area, important in the detection of glaucoma.
* Evaluation of the eye muscles, and their coordination.
* Dilation of the pupils to examine the retina and vitreous, using the direct and indirect ophthalmoscope.
(Once dilating drops are placed in your eye, you will be asked to return to the waiting room until the pupils
dilate. Dilation of the pupils may cause you to be sensitive to bright light, and may make it difficult for you
to read. If necessary, we will provide you with disposable sunglasses for outdoors). We use an eye drop at the
end of your examination, the purpose of which is to reverse the dilation of your pupils; your eyes should return to normal
in about one hour, instead of the 4 to 5 hours it took previously.
Special tests may be performed when indicated:
CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY
This is our new state-of-the-art instrument in which a miniature video camera photographs your
cornea. The image is then processed by a computer to produce a color map of the entire cornea. This not
only enables us to fit contact lenses with exquisite accuracy, but also is of great importance in evaluating
those patients who are interested in the new laser vision correction for the treatment of myopia.
* AUTOMATED AND COMPUTERIZED VISUAL FIELDS to evaluate side vision and visual loss in glaucoma and other problems.
The computer can compare old and recent tests automatically, and the instrument will acutally TALK to
you throughout the examination. This is the machine:
* ULTRASONOGRAPHY (using high frequency sound waves to image the eye). Here it is:
* FLUORESCEIN ANGIOGRAPHY to study the retinal circulation.
* STEREOSCOPIC EXAMINATION of the retina with special lenses.
* INTERFEROMETRY to help determine the source of any visual loss.
* ELECTRONIC TONOGRAPHY to aid in the evaluation of glaucoma.
* Tests for abnormalities in tearing.

ABOUT OUR OFFICE STAFF
Anne and Magda are indispensable members of the team. In addition to their office duties, they administer
visual field examinations and assist in making sure all the patients are as comfortable as possible. More importantly, theu share our approach to the practice of medicine. They make up a big part of the warm and caring attitude that you will find throughout the office.
They will also be greeting you, taking your history, processing your insurance claims, ordering your contact lenses, scheduling your tests or
surgery, and answering your questions. In this office, the only "dumb" question in the one that has not been asked!
ABOUT THE OFFICE
Pictures of the Office Waiting Room, to Make you as comfortable as possible
The office was planned and executed by Anne-Marie Morris, who served as architect, contractor,
and interior designer. It may look quite unlike any office you have ever seen. In fact, it may not look like an office at all -- until you
notice the high-tech equipment in the examining rooms. Because eye problems can generate anxiety, we have done everything possible to make you feel
comfortable and right at home. As the seasons change, and the holidays arrive, you will notice the "homey" decor of the office and entrance hall changing
as well. We have tried to provide you with a continuing visual feast, to emphasize the importance of the eyes, and to reassure you that we will go to any
lengths possible to improve your vision or restore your sight.
Our most recent acquisition is a portrait of Dr. Morris by the renowned painter Jack Beal. Mr. Beal also painted the masterpiece, "The Sense of
Sight," (the large painting in the Waiting Room) which depicts the importance of vision to artist and subject, the instruments that are used to enhance it, and
the attempts of man to understand it. It is dedicated to Dr. Morris for performing the cataract surgery which restored Mr. Beal's sight. A book illustrating many of
Jack Beal's paintings can be found in the Waiting Room. In addition, a new book called ART TODAY by Edward Lucie-Smith (Phaidon) features a full page color
photo of this painting on page 223, which is presented as one of the finest examples of Beal's work. The painting will be on loan to the Allegheny Museum of Art from
September to December 1997, where it will be featured in an exhibition: Dramatic Realism: The New Baroque.
